Crimean War British Generals. I've seen both gold and red.

I am going with red. The costumes in the 1968 Charge of the Light Brigade were pretty authentic, aside from all the cavalry wearing red trousers.

The photo is flopped. It's a mirror image of the correct image. I didn't catch that when I posted it.

Sorry to arrive late for this, but the answer would surely be gold stripes for full dress and red for service dress. Sir John and his fellow generals in the still are correctly all in service dress. However all generals would have had access to both and it would be a brave soldier who critiqued his general's dress sense if he chose to wear the wrong trousers to a battle.
