I've put together a blog post on building a platoon sized force for the British for my FWW games set during 1916-18. All from the lovely Great War Miniatures range. The full post with more images here First World War British Platoon

Wow! The miniatures, models and scenery are all outstanding! The museum and colorized historical photos are great as well! Cheerios! |

When the tanks moved up to the front, officers would go ahead, poking the ground with their canes, and making sure the tanks did not get into soft ground where they would bog down. What did the infantry officers use their canes for? Pretty much the same thing? Grelber |

Very nicely done. Was wear of the rank badges on the cuffs still commonplace in 1916-18? Robert Graves relates the anecdote about being pulled up for having his badges on his shoulder straps in 1915 in "Good-bye To All That" ("T'other wart's got a wind-up tunic"), implying that even then it was an obsolete attitude. |

Very nicely done. Was wear of the rank badges on the cuffs still commonplace in 1916-18? The National Army Museum has a nice example of an officer's uniform. The museum label talks about these coming off cuffs and on to shoulders only ‘after 1917'. Of course that doesn't mean these changes weren't happening earlier.

Well, Graves was told to visit the regimental tailor en route from the mess to the orderly room, so maybe he was a bit premature, practice in the Welsh Regiment notwithstanding. Of course, the Second Royal Welsh were wearing shorts at the time, which tells you something about how hard it can be to cast miniatures that capture all of the variations you find from the regulations, once an army is in the field. |
