Amazingly, a Russian soldier managed to catch a drone trying to kill him.

Unfortunately, he then dropped the drone, and it is believed he did not survive the explosion.

What causes the drone to detonate?

I think some Ukrainian drones have electric detonators. They have 2 metal contacts that stick out of the front. If the drone hits something the contacts bend in and touch, closing the circuit.

@HMS, thanks. I figured it had to be some type of plunger or trigger since the operator did not simply detonate it remotely.
