I'm planning to purchase and paint up a 28mm French Dragoon regiment in the not too distant future and have been researching which regiment to base them on. I'm wanting to paint up a different regiment to those I painted in 6mm (20th Regt) and I think it will be either the 14th or 16th Regiment.

Research so far shows both regiments having pink facings and most sources appeared to portray facings as light or pastel pink. However, I also came across an image of the 14th Regiment with dark pink facings. This image can be found in The French Army of the Orient 1798-1801 by Yves Martin, pages 21 & 22.

I like the look of the darker pink but wondered if the darker colour was just the author's impression and that they should be a lighter pink?

The darker the pink is will make it more likely that it is not pink so go light.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the shade of pink that was issued was fairly dark, in the assumption that it would fade. So if your regiment is depicted in new uniforms go with a darker pink, whereas if they're in weather-beaten campaign dress go with a lighter shade (the dark green of the coat perhaps also having faded).

Have you seen Paul Dawson's work, rose appears quite dark. See link for dye samples – link

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated. I might try both and see which looks best. But I have plenty of time to change my mind, considering I haven't bought the actual miniatures yet. LOL
But best to be prepared, I guess. For some reason, I seem to be sorting out colours and paints before obtaining the actual miniatures. The fun of wargaming! Is this a 28mm thing or just me?

It's a 1/72 thing too… (smile)

It's also a funding thing, in my case, bills and other commitments are saying no, you haven't any spare cash for buying miniatures at the moment. Paints yes, miniatures no. So keep researching and preparing until you do! LOL
