Which dice do you prefer as the primary dice used by a rules system? D6 D10 D12 D20 D30 D100 etc. |

If its handfuls then D6s Otherwise 10s would also be OK |

D20, allows a reasonable number of key variables o be tracked credibly a nd quickly. Its been the standard for RPG's for many years. |

D6 unless there is a very good reason to use something else. |

This video provides more detail on dice, but D6 unless there is a good reason to use another type of dice would be my answer. youtu.be/5TBWPEmZKlM |

I prefer whatever dice type(s) and quantity(-ies) produce(s) the statistical range of values needed by the system. There is nothing superior about a d6, d8, d10, or d12, anymore than a screwdriver is better than a hammer. They're tools with different uses. You don't use a drill to split wood; you don't use an axe to clean a window. Use the right tool for the job. There are definitely shapes of dice I dislike – d20s are too close to round, and pyramid d4s make better caltrops than dice. I still use 20s when called for, and I collected a pile of rectangular d4s so I could get rid of all the hobbles before one hobbled me. |

Either it's all D6's, or I use a range for advantages--Militia roll D8's, line D10's and Guard D12's--that sort of thing. |

Other: Custom, but those are usually six-sided |
Herkybird | 04 Sep 2024 3:40 a.m. PST |
D10 for me, with D6 a close second. |
Dal Gavan | 04 Sep 2024 4:00 a.m. PST |
D6 to D20. Big enough- and with enough contrast between the dice numbers and body- to read from four feet away, if possible. That doesn't mean I won't use other dice, though, if the rules call for them. |

D6….and if they would only roll my way I would be happy. |

D100, really 2 x D10, seems to solve everything |
Tgerritsen | 04 Sep 2024 7:32 a.m. PST |
Honestly don't really care? 2d6 has the classic number spread and the odds are well understood, but frankly I don't mind as long as it isn't weird (D4s and D12s only or something weird like that). |
TimePortal | 04 Sep 2024 8:18 a.m. PST |
I have used d10 more than d6 when designing games. Though once I designed a set of fantasy tactical rules in which each race rolled a different type of die depending on race/species. |

D10…. I find a d6 a little limiting. |

I'm fine as long as the system doesn't require bespoke dice with special symbols on each side. I have a half-design in the drawer for an Elizabethan naval game that uses a bunch of d12s – very period. |

If we're going to roll a lot, make it d6's. If it's just one or a few, I don't care very much, though dice bigger than a d20 are a bit of a pain. ("d100" is fine as I've got plenty of percentile dice.) |

D10 and D6. I don't like D20 at all. |
Stryderg | 04 Sep 2024 9:15 p.m. PST |
I like d20s, that 5% chance makes figuring odds really easy. D10s are a close second, very versatile. And then D6s, just because they are ubiquitous. |
Bunkermeister | 04 Sep 2024 10:38 p.m. PST |
I use a custom D20 numbered 5, 10, 15 etc in 5% increments. I use a second die a custom 6 sided with both the standard numbers and a directional arrow on each side. Both die get tossed each time a die is required. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |

D6, although I do sometimes use poyhedral dice for dice type = quality type systems. |

Custom… i don't want to be have the fame about numbers |
freecloud | 07 Sep 2024 8:42 a.m. PST |
I hate rules that make you use multiple dice types, stick to one dice tpe (D6, D10 etc). IMO one can approximate most probabilities well with 1 or 2 x D6 |

Whatever the design mechanics call for. Sometimes all you need are d6's, other times more variables are required, or different dice can handle resolution mechanics that make for simpler, faster playing games than relying on charts or tables or tracking modifiers. |
