As we see with the Turks becoming less secular and more religious that may be a bit of a problem. With Turkey having the second largest military in NATO. When they joined NATO their religion at that time really did interfere. The Turks wanted to become more like Western Europe back then.
As we know many followers of islam see those that don't follow their religion are considered "infidels". Even the Sunni and Shia refer to each other as infidels, at times. ISIS calls everyone else who is not ISIS – infidels. Nothing new there.

FWIW, those Marines were most likely briefed to avoid conflict with the local islamists. I.e. that could be considered the "ROE". Had that not been the case. Those Marines would have put their attackers on the ground with injuries, etc. But of course, that is not good geopolitics nor optics.

Wishing for the days of 1890-1900. The ability of sending in real force to clean up the anti-American attacks.

There's a great story about Captain William Pakenham, one of the Victorian Royal Navy's great characters, going ashore ahead of his marines and sailors, and confronting a mob of Turkish rioters who had been attacking Greeks on Cyprus (or Crete, or wherever) with just his interpreter. The conversation supposedly started with, "Inform these ugly b*****ds I don't intend to tolerate any more of their beastly behavior." It worked.

There's a lot to be said for cultural self-confidence.

We have no cultural self-confidence anymore. We have been told to often how we are the bad guys now. We caused all the worlds' problem. The world was a paradise before Europeans, later Americans, began to roam around.

It was a publicity stunt by a mostly secular "student" group. They grabbed the guys and shouted to the cameras about how all Americans were responsible for Gaza.

It's like fanatical animal rights folks spray painting anti-whaling slogans on a Toyota plant and the press pretending that all Americans are anti-Japanese racists.

But easy to express those views, when your countries leader says similar things and threatens troops to fight Israel.

IMO … This mostly is the result of the woke progressive DEI, CRT culture that has much more influence on our society than it should. E.g. Masculine men are see as "bad". But no matter what narrative the woke progressive left, etc. espouses. You need some, I believe the current term is "High T Alphas". To actually "kick , take names and rip out of the wall, etc.

The world is still full of predators, those that will do us harm, etc. So there has to be a counter measure … Otherwise, as we see currently you can't always talk to the enemy, give them $, etc.

Sometimes a little brute force is required … If not … the enemy will continue to take advantage of weaknesses.

Yes that would be no surprise. Anti-American islamists are not anything new. As I said the Marines ROE was probably withdrawing/not engage. Which makes sense from a geopolitical POV, etc. However, these types of attacks from these types of people will probably continue. As they know they can get away with it.

But it would have been very satisfying(at least to me) if the islamist attackers got their handed to them. With a "good old tough guy America tradition". That we rarely see anymore …

I guess I would be considered suffering from "toxic masculinity". 🦸‍♂️ But I'm far too old, fat and crippled to participate in anything like that at this point.
