Hello everyone,
In your opinion, what is the simplest of the simplest wargame rules on the WWII?

What level would you like to fight? The options for 1 casting=1 man are very different for the options at 1 base=1 platoon.

Tank to tank combat with supporting infantry and artillery. Tanks given an armor rating and gun are given a penetration rating. If a gun penetrates a 6 and the tank armor rating is a 5 or 6 then the tank is hit with a damage causing force. No more missing by a millimeter or two armor.
In the original rules movement had a rating. Fire! Ogon! Freur! 1983
Range could be 1:100, 1:50 or 1:25 depending on casting scale used or table size.

Oh there's a blast from the past Col Piron! A fantastic book and a great set of rules for a young lad just getting into wargaming. I lost count of the number of times my Airfix & Matchbox men fought it out over King beach on D-Day and then over that bridge and into the village.

I assume you mean commercially produced rules, correct?

khanscom31 Aug 2024 6:07 p.m. PST

"Fast Rules" is about the simplest set I've tried; I think they are now available in a new edition.

Panzertruppe by Chris Pagano!
The last version is M4A1 and might still be available at Wargames Vault.
What little money he made from it he donated to charity! There are no other editions! He also explains all of his logic on how he made the rules and stats and even gives suggestions on how to change certain stats and the implication! (Do you think that the Panther should have stronger front armor? Add a point of armor and add 2 points to its cost.)
Wonderful rules for 1/300 scale up to 12mm (we joyfully play both). Could maybe do 15mm…

PZ8. Can't get any simpler than that.

Kiss Rommel or Neil Thomas rules.

I still have and play the original 1983 edition Fire! Ogon! Freur!. I find it a fun set of rules that play fairly quick. I really ought to see if I can convert it to solo play.

TimePortal01 Sep 2024 8:31 a.m. PST

Dave, back in the early 2000s, I did do a conversion to hex maps to make it a much faster play in both movement and gun range determination. Thanks for the note. A great use for Battletech maps.

Have to agree with Grattan54 PZ8 is pretty simple at two pages (one page if printed back to back). Site also has 2 page rules for a variety of eras and genres. Best of all it is free:

Bolt action is not fast play, even I know that.

I looked at the PZ8 rules certaily I have seen a lot worse could be a good starter.

Deserter09 Sep 2024 2:05 p.m. PST

One Hour Wargames, the WW2 rules are the simplest of the simplest (and they are actually fun, especially if you play the scenarios in the book)
