Being a local show holiday, we were able to get a Bronze Age wargame in – Hittites facing a coalition of Mycenaean & Sea Peoples.
The game used 'Hail Caesar' rules with 3 divisions a side of plastic 1/72 & metal 20mm figures.

We decided a 10 turn game in which you had to either break your enemy's army or, alternately, take & hold their camp/base and/or an important local shrine to the god, Tarhunna.

What an exciting game! Right up to the last turn it could have gone either way.
The key is of course the chariot units:

But archer, spearmen & even skirmish units played their part. One unit of lowly slingers held up the elite Hittite heavy chariots for the entire game:

In the end, on nearly the final dice rolls, the centre Hittite division crumbled & gave possession of the shrine to their Mycenaean enemies.

A special shout-out goes to the Sea Peoples who failed 8 out of 10 initial activation rolls. Damned pirates.

Great looking game! Chariots on the table just look awesome! Are some of those figs Newline Design? I was just looking at files for that era last night. I have Mittani, Myceanean, Egyptian, Hittite and Hebrew files. I also own a bunch of HAT, Caesar and Atlantic figs for it. I have wanted to game it since those Atlantic Greek and Trojan sets were released in the 70's. I hadn't thought about using Hail Caeser for them although I own 1st edition. I had been looking at the Hail Caser epic rules too. I wonder if the difference is great between the two?

Thanks!

I find the HC rules give a quick and enjoyable game. Some think they're a bit bland but if you add select 'special abilities' units are quite distinct.

Newline have supplied many of the chariots, various command stands & some whole units. TBH we're pretty well served for the Bronze Age in 1/72.

…..except. I'd like to add a unit of Mycenaean cavalry. They're a debatable troop type at this stage but IMO plausible. No one makes them & mods are difficult/impossible.

Are you using HC 1 or 2nd edition? I am a fan of chaos in my rules and HC provides that. I played Warmaster Ancients years ago and that's where the concepts for HC came from and I liked them.

Yeah, I don't know of anything except for maybe Atlantic Greek Cavalry that would possibly remotely fit for their Cavalry. Even that's probably a stretch. You might be able to cut off the top part of the Caeser Mycenaean infantry and use an ancients cavalry bottom to make that work.

Thanks!

/2
There's not much difference between the two, so I wouldn't buy /2 if I didn't need to.

Your solution for the cavalry is, I think, the only possible one.
I'll look into it. Thanks, John.

I ordered a copy of Hail Caesar Epic and got a pdf of Hail Caesar 2. I already own the older version and have several of the different books on various wars/armies from Warlord. i always liked those books and pick up the pdf's at a minimum when they are on sale. I like the mechanics in HC. I really appreciate your thoughts on the rules. I COMPLETELY love seeing your game pics for them!

Thanks.

John
