Has a friend or a game roup ever dissuaded or talked you out of starting a new scale ("We don't need 10mm. We already hve 6mm and 15mm."), starting a new genre ("Post-apocalyptic is so 80s!"), a new historical period ("7YW is way too linear! That's why we only play Napoleonics."), a certain army, or playing a different set of rules ("We never play XYZ!") that you really wanted to do but the other(s) didn't? You get the drift. Peer pressure can be a cruel mistress.

Frequent discussions at the store and at conventions. Even among friends.

Nobody has ever talked me out of anything.

I have talked myself out of new projects, usually by checking what's available (and coming up short), but also sometimes by engaging other gamers in conversations about potential periods/wars/topics and finding zero interest. There are always some periods that are just duds with the available gaming crew.

I just talked myself INTO doing a "project" that only required $8.00 USD. 🙄
I already had Pirates and bateaux and rowers.
Suddenly I got obsessed with Moby Dick.
I spent $8.00 USD on a sperm whale at Michael's. 🙄 So I also picked up a HUGE Great White Shark. Because, why not?
I already had a box of heads, including Scottish bonnets. I had Texas Rangers with a top hat. And I just have to take a Long John Silver for Gregory Peck. Paint the peg leg white of course.

Not every "project" is that easy. I almost feel guilty. 🙄 Not really.

My cheep projects using mostly existing figures, etc end up costing me $100 USDs as mission creep takes over. Still fun though.

I'm the one usually talking people out of something and into finishing a project they'd already started.

The flea market always lends perspective. Nothing like the Pyramid of Regret--12 nicely painted figures, about 50 primed and some paint, and then a big pile of bags never opened.

I'm always so much happier looking at an army in need of touch-up painting and rebasing and generally looking abused. It's good odds someone got their money's worth out of them.

We are not really period dabblers, the oft quoted "why play one period when you can play them all" to me personally has a ring of absurdity and irrelevance similar to "gravity does not exist, the earth sucks": so no.

I do look for new rules but they have to be demonstrably be a better simulation, not just a rehash of an existing set with gimmicks. Alas that for me, has been the case for many years in new rules.

"… a ring of absurdity and irrelevance…"
"Age quod agis", as Ringo says to Doc Holliday.
And Doc replied "Credat Judaeus Apella. Non ego."
