Reading Hill 112--thanks for the recommendation, guys!--and ran across an incident in Normandy where an armor brigade commander was being pressured to make what he judged to be a costly and futile attack. BRIGADE COMMANDER "If my lead regiment crests that hill, it will take 75% losses and not achieve its objective." DIVISION COMMANDER "Who's your lead regiment?" BRIGADE COMMANDER "The Scots Greys." [PAUSE] DIVISION COMMANDER "Couldn't you send a regiment less well known?" It makes a sort of sense. Lose some high-number battalion of the Royal Tanks, and you've just lost the men and tanks. Get the Scots Greys chopped up, and you're in history books for at least a century, and not in a good way. They might name a sweater after you. But does anyone do this in game or scenario design? You can have the famous regiment which might be better-trained or have higher morale--but losing them costs victory points not otherwise at risk. Might keep the Old Guard from being committed every weekend, for instance. |

I did have the famous 'Green Dragoons', one of my units for TYW battles. Regardless of what player was using them or how favorable the tactical situation was for said unit, it always failed morale. So players learned not to count on them for anything except a rapid departure from the battlefield. |

At a lesser level a squadron leader may have a troop leader he doesn't like, guess who's always lead troop. Except they will work this out and then they become very cautious. there are all sorts of options for an imaginative scenario setter. |

I am pretty sure I have seen exact scenario rules for committing the Old Guard along the lines you mention. Trying to recall where! |
