As I've been doing my inventory, I got to wondering whatever happened to my 40K project – that is, to build two basic forces, Grey Knights versus Chaos Space Marines.

I double-checked, and sure enough, the Grey Knights were finished some time ago. (Well, finished enough to fight!)

So the problem is the Chaos Space Marines side of things. I found the rest of the figures I planned to finish up, and thanks to my inventory, I found I actually have a lot more figures waiting to be painted. In fact, I have a ton of Chaos Space Marines, more than I have of Grey Knights!

Problem solved. Now I either need to wait for a slot to get these figures onto the workbench, or I need to push another project out of the way to give this one higher priority. After all, this one is almost table-ready. grin

My own personal 40K project stalled because I was buying them to play with my son. But he "grew out" of playing wargames and going to conventions.
And then nobody in my group was interested.
So I sold out and recouped my expenses.
I might also add that the 40K universe started to turn me off.

Later projects stalled because I had too many pans in the fire at one time.

Presumably, something more shiny came along and distracted you.

That is the "natural" course of events!

I dropped carrying GW back in the mid-1980s due to a lot of business reasons based on their stocking policies.
Still I got the 40k books and tried to get into the universe. I could not get into it. Even the "good" guys Space Marines sacrificed millions of people a day . Nope not for me. As such I never painted 40k or Warhammer.

So maybe your interest waned because you no longer enjoyed it background.

Chief may I suggest Kill team for you.

Way less painting and you will not need a second mortgage.

Worked for me.

The CSM trim usually kills most people's enthusiasm.

You spent too much time trying to think up names for them all …

You looked at them , sighed, and said "these really are rather silly… where's Napoleon's Old Guard…I'll paint them instead"

Gorkamorka or Necromunda are much more affordable. They only cost an arm OR a leg, instead of an arm and a leg. 🙄
