I was inspired to try and build a French mountain gun, disassembled and carried on mules, as I have some Pyrennes games that may call for one of these batteries. Visual reference was slim on the net, but I did find a couple of later era mountain guns on mules that gave me a starting point at least. My build is more representative of the Piedmontese wheeled carriage used extensively by the French, but I admit to a fair amount of creative licence!
There is more about the build here on my blog:

And here a few photos:

Bill,

Very nicely done, although a couple of the mules have a very weary (and stubborn looking) pose. grin

Re, "the mules have a very weary (and stubborn looking) pose." I am not surprised considering the weight that they are carrying, particularly the mule carrying the gun barrel.

Nicely done mountain guns!

Beautiful, it's what makes a diorama, or a scenario really pop! Those little hidden gems on the table make for something special.

Skill with the added features. The longer coat tails on the gunners, the ears on the mules, the shako covers not overdone….…not easy in 1/72 scale (don't I know it)

Re:"the mules have a very weary (and stubborn looking) pose." Too funny. I think it was the HaT gunners' poses that make them look stubborn – the gunners were very active, so I decided to have them tugging on the mules' halters. "Mules" of course starting life as Airfix French artillery horses, nice and stocky and slightly smaller so easy to convert.

Good decision, Bill.

Mr Peninsular has the gift of making his wonderful work and scenery very evocative of the Iberian .

Those Airfix horses have certainly been given a new lease of life.

Excellent work as always.

Best wishes,

Chris

Those grain stores are excellent! You've sparked my interest so I'm going to put together a Royal Artillery equivalent. My modelling skills are rather limited (and my Airfix Napoleonic figures disappeared 50 years ago) so I'm going to use one of the Perry's Carlist Wars Mountain Gun sets.
