I've been working on translating the Roman army of the middle Republic into the Lion Rampant ruleset (both Camillian (350bc -220bc) and Polybian (220bc-106bc)).

So far I have…

Equites (Camillian) – light cavalry
Equites (Polybian) – heavy cavalry
Accensi – levied infantry (essentially camp followers)
Rorarii – light infantry
Leves/Velites – skirmisher
Hastati (Camillian) light infantry with javelins
Hastati (Polybian) light infantry with javelins
Principes(Camillian) – veteran heavy infantry
Principes (Polybian) – veteran heavy infantry with javelins

I'm only stuck on how I should represent the triarii: heavy or elite infantry.

Part of me wants to classify them as Elite Infantry due to their smaller maniple sizes. However, I'm not sure if Roman triarii should be classified as truly elite units like, say, Theban/Carthaginian Sacred Band, Companion cavalry, or Persian Immortals.

What would you do?

Hi, it's a while since I assembled my republican Roman army for the Second Punic War and scholarship may well have moved on and so my comments are tentative and derived from my interpretation of various guidance, army lists etc. Both hastati and principes were assessed at the same value as Heavy Infantry. Although armed with the pilum they were not classified as javelin armed but rather had the weapon reflected in a plus on their impact/melee rating. Triarii were classified as HI spear armed. My understanding is that these were older but not necessarily elite and were sometimes used as camp or baggage guards as well as the last line.
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will provide better input but that is my understanding.
Cheers.

I agree with Brunanburh. Hastati and Principes are definitely heavy infantry with throwing weapons. I also agree that Triarii are generally overrated in most rules sets. Basically they anchored the army and provided strong morale support for the other two lines of heavies but were not generally expected to fight. Even their formation being only half size and 3 ranks deployment proves that fighting was not their primary purpose. The Triarii could provide a solid line of retreat for the army if things went bad. The true elite of the Roman infantry was the Principes.

From my limited understanding, if the enemy had reached the triarii then the army was on the verge of disaster and all was nearly lost.
In Lion Rampant terms I would classify them as foot serjeants with thrusting spears.
