(MAI-JUIN 1808) "It is sometimes thought that after the small and large conspiracies of the Consulate, Napoleon was able to sleep soundly and that the regime of authority established with the Empire (and especially after 1807) killed all opposition. Obviously, this is not the case. The conspiracy of 1808 allows, at its level, to reject both aspects of this received idea.
André Palluel-Guillard wrote: "Napoleon never lacked opponents." And, indeed, the political life of the First Empire was not stifled by Napoleon's "iron fist," hindered by the police regime and censorship. No regime, even the most horrible of dictatorships (which was not the case with this one) can control consciences or kill all opposition. From 1800 to 1815, institutions and opinion – when it expressed itself through its most enterprising elements – did not always unanimously line up behind the Emperor of the French. But, as everyone knows, in a regime of authority, the weapons of an opposition cannot be those that are used in a democratic regime…" OT
