Did Prussian hussars during the SYW have regulations/requirements regarding regiment-specific colors for horses? I know cuirassiers, and secondly dragoons, preferred dark-colored animals – preferebly black(ish), but what about hussars? Any real references? Thanks for your inputs! Ioannis |

According to the osprey on Frederick's cavalry as the war went on the quality of horses decreased so that even the heavies had to make do with smaller horses; possibly therefore having to use lighter coloured ones too. Beggars can't be chosers. I would imagine that the hussars therefore ended up with a lot more light coloured horses in the ranks. |

Prussian Hussars were officially given 'Polish' horses – that's basically a catch-all term for every nag that wasn't a North-German Heavy thoroughbred dark bay! So lighter-coloured and even multi-coloured horses would be typical – even more so as campaign remounts appeared. |

A good friend from Germany sent me this message
Horse colours for the Prussian cavalry according to "Die Heere der kriegführenden Staaten 1756-1763": Dragoons rode black or black-brown horses. After the SYW all kind of horse colours were in use, also Schecken (multi coloured) and Tiger (striped). Tambours and musicians rode dark coloured horses, kettledrummers Schimmeln (white). After 1763 also tambours and musicians rode Schimmeln. Prussian hussar regiments 1. Füchse (red brown, fox coloured) (especially preferred with white manes and tails) 2. Schimmel (whites – dabble grey – roan) 3. Füchse 4. Schecken (you will have to find the exact English term yourself - multi colloured) 5. Schimmel, Falben (yellow), Isabellen (isabella coloured) and Schecken. 6. Braune (brown) and Schimmeln. 7. Rappen (black) 8. Braune and Isabellen. I am painting HR4 on multicolored mounts and it is a royal pain

My cheap German-English pocket dictionary has "dappled" and "piebald" under the related word "scheckenig" (although nothing for Schecken itself). So it would seem that piebald is the best translation, meaning multicoloured, to match Ioannis' German correspondent's information. |

I run a google image search with "schecken pferd" and I got blackish/dark brown with white patches
So, that's what I am painting my horses. Next time, I will pick an easier regiment
