Klenau Chevaulegers Regiment No. 5

I have finished the first Austrian cavalry unit for the Aspern project.

These sculpts from Mr Kane are wonderful and paint up very well indeed.

Here they are led by Oberst Raban Freiherr Von Spiegel .

Lots to do.

My turn to make a helpful suggestion.

Face markings (on the horses not the riders)

Even on the grey. (I have no problem with non French trumpeters on a grey. British regulations specifically prohibited the practice, which is surely telling you something. It was all too common)

A white (or actually off white ivory) totally transforms the average equus. Just a stripe above and below the nasal cross strap of the harness. Brings them to life

Should there be a link to more images? Would love to see them.

Bay horses. If they have black legs (as some of yours do), they must have black manes and tails. Chestnuts have no black anywhere, but can vary massively in the depth of brown. Mind you, bays can even be chestnut coloured, but they cannot be true "Chestnuts". (weird isn't it?). I know what I mean……..

Great work and also great advice from Deadhead on painting horses (the one thing I don't like about painting minis) – I am about to start a SYW cavalry brigade so I shall try this out!

Good points Mr D.

One or two do have facings but as usual the camera is the proof positive.

I personally, looking at the pictures, am not so happy with the horses too.

The grey needs touching up especially.

These are the only pictures, taken as a work in progress record for my Aspern project.

Thank you for the suggestions. Uniforms, architecture, agriculture, town planning, history and now equine colouring, it's a fascinating hobby of ours.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hello Mr D.

I have been looking into this grey horse for trumpeters business.

I was under the impression that their light coloured horses aided identification to the commander ( and also made them a tempting target) as they were the radios of their day.

Whilst availability on campaign would be an issue, my research shows pictures of Austrian trumpeters mounted on greys. The genius Francesco at Franznap also has his hussar and lancer fellows on greys.

Any information would be useful as I am still at the beginning of my journey of discovery into the Austrian army of 1809.

I found this useful link regarding horse colours.

Better to correct things now than half way through my re fight.

Best wishes,

Chris

Haythornthwaite's Osprey on Austrian cavalry says (of the Chevaulegers) that greys were preferred for musicians.

Cheers,
John
