First 20mm, then was thinking of 15mm, finally settled on WWII in 28mm with Perry Miniatures' offerings.

Got started on some terrain, and the plastic Afrikakorps box. Unfortunately, the store didn't have any Americans in stock – an order will be, well, in order.

Second guessing my purchase a bit, thinking maybe I should've gotten the Bolt Action stuff, but I can always do that for other theatres :D that will probably stop once I get them painted, or get some vehicles next to them. But I quite like the cartoony look too.

I've made some of the poses a bit awkward, but will probably improve on the next sprues. Also struggling to make the "proper" historical options, as I think there are a bit too few rifles on each sprue, or maybe just about enough? Not quite sure, it's a bit confusing.

I've found the Perry plastics wonderful!
The German box is just about right, with the tasty extras, like the radio operator and, I believe, an anti-tank rifle.
The box comes with an organization guide, for an historical platoon. This doesn't always jive with Bolt Actions organizations though. BA has a lot of "customization" to your squads. I also have a fair amount of Perry metals that fit well with their plastics.
I have some Warlord plastics, but you really have to squint for them to get along with Perry's. There's nothing wrong with building an exclusive Warlord army. They have a lot of variety, but keep in mind the compatibility.
Warlord's armor fits nicely with Perry, Blitzkrieg, Rubicon (Rubicon's drivers are just a bit tinnier than Perry's, but not annoyingly so) as far as I can tell.
Welcome to the vast desert!
By the way, we have been playing DAK Attacks. It's a ball and you can use Axis vehicles as targets! It a great way to get your LRDG vehicles and man-dolls on the table!

Yeah, I won't be playing Bolt Action, but Five Men in Normandy by Nordic Weasel Games. It's a nice little skirmish game with no more than 10 figures a side, with an awesome campaign system. The forces you fight against are randomly generated, so I just wanna build enough dudes where I can play along with anything that comes up on the random tables, for the moment at least. Although thanks for the recommendation of DAK Attack, I will take a look!

Having said that, I would like to build them as a historical platoon, just for my own satisfaction. So far I've got a second guy in the squad with an MP40 instead of a Kar98, but I think I'll be able to fix that with the next sprue/squad. Soldiers tended to want to get their hands on SMGs whenever they could, so I'm not too fussed about it.

Yep, I know, Perry and Warlord infantry don't really get along, which is why from the start I decided to go with one or the other – I think I'll be buying Warlord vehicles and Perry crew metals (where they are available separately), otherwise just Blitzkrieg+Perry sets, I was ogling the Opel Blitz/Maultier they've got in fact :D. Rubicon aren't very widely available in my area, and while I do enjoy scale modelling armour and such, I would like a more simple, "for wargaming", build too.

Regarding the second SMG in a WH squad (Gruppe) as I understand it, this should not be a problem as the second in command (Stellvertreter Gruppenführer) was also commander of the gun group and was usually an Obergefreiter thus would most likely have a MP38/40.

Offensive Miniatures DAK figs match up very well with Perry.

Artilleryman, that's great to know, thank you!

DukeWacoan, thanks for the recommendation, I'd heard of em before, might check em out if I expand – for now as I'll be playing skirmish just this box is more than good enough.

One box is enough!?
