A recent post showing Italian Wars got me feeling nostalgic for the days when I used to play the period. However, finding players who wish to play in 28mm ( or 25mm) is difficult as most people in my city seem to prefer 15 and well, I would rather gouge my eye out with a rusty fork than do 15mm.

As far as I can tell there are two issues; both are inextricably intertwined; the first is finding players, the second is finding a rule set.

I am conscious that what rules should I play usually attract a response of often unhelpful comments from people recommending their favourite ruleset without considering what the OP has asked so I will add some detail in the hope that this eliminates the useless responses.

1) Not interested in a DBM experience
I do not want to play DBM or FOG type game ( including MeG ADLG or Triumph) as these games fail to excite me ( I am at heart a Warhammer player so these sort of top down pushback pushback pushback games bore me- to each their own)

2) No Grids

3) Period flavour

4) preferably some sort of alternating IGOUGO though this is not essential

5) No random activation i,e using card draw or chits from a bag. I also tried Pike and Shotte but did not care for the game.
6) some form of attrition: wound counters are fine , casualty removal is also fine
&) playable to a finish in 2-2 amd a half hours.

As far as I am aware there may be only two contenders- Furioso and Never Mind the Billhooks. I have played Furiso but try as we might, I cold never get the game to finish in under 3 hours. NBTBH however, has randomised card based activations which is a turn off.

Are there any other in print contenders?

I once said the same about grids, until I played a game that used them. It's great

I have been looking for the same set of rules as you since I stopped playing Gush 25+ years ago. DBMM works pretty well for the period. Basing is an issue.

Good luck finding what you are looking for. While you do that, I'm looking for an investment that returns not less than the real inflation rate, plus 5%, with no risk whatsoever to my principal.

28mm vs 15mm does effect the number of other players and the size of table. I would do 28mm just to paint up Perry late medieval, but then I'm nuts and you may be considering later 16th century

Note that MeG and ADLG do not have push back/recoils. Units suffer from attrition

There is a Renaissance version of Impetus, can't remember the name. Haven't played it

What was it about pike and shot that you didn't like? I would have thought that it would appeal to a Warhammer player

@Gray Bear
I have just the thing for your investment!! Send me $100 USD and I will forward the details

Loved the Gush rules ! We've been using Pike and Shotte and enjoying them.

Perfect Captain perhaps? Renaissance era Impetus would definitely seem to fit the bill, too.

Legend of Doom26 Jul 2024 12:16 p.m. PST

Impetus has rules and lists covering the Italian Wars. the renaissance version is called barouque and its intended for the 17th century rather than the period of 1494-1534

DBMM and ADLG are not contendors,. I dont like the activation system in pike and shotte .

I;m minded to try Nevermind but just ditch the random card activation system and have alternating IGOUGO . As for figures I have around 60 painted mounted gendarmes and 400 pike, plus around 70 arquebusiers and 70 crossbnow. figures are not issue.

I haven't played either one of these rulesets but you might want to look into them.

George,

The guys playing The Italian Wars at our club are using Pike and Shotte (more as it's familiar to other players than a great set of rule) but with continual amendments as they go along.

I'm usually in the other room playing WAB (don't ask! LOL) but pop through when it's quiet to get some snaps.

I'm beginning to think that for a very good set of Italian Wars large scale battle rules, people are going to have to get their heads together and start from scratch.

Atheling

it was your recent posts which got me excited about getting my figures out for a game. You miniature teaser ( lol) its just sad that 28mm renaissance wargaming seems to have died in my city.

I am back to painting Unsullied for ASOIAF – I have two games this week and can usually get in a few games a month. 28mm Renaissance seems dead as dead can be in my city

True, I'm a Furioso man

Can you play a game of furioso to a finish in 2 hours? Is it possible
