From the Sudan campaign, this is a 3D model of the stern-wheeler that was used on the Nile river:

Some further modifications needed but the final versions of the STL files will be published on Thingiverse.

Very nice! The stern wheel has always been a problem for those of us who were interested in taking a stab at scratch building a gunboat, and 3d printing seems to be able to resolve that problem. In fact, there might even be a market for just the paddle wheel, for folks who want to build a different boat.

Very good idea, Grelber. I will ensure that the paddle wheel is released as a separate STL file in the whole bundle.

I agree with Grelber. I would have given anything for some premade paddle wheels when I made my Nile River gunboats . I ended up using some decorative gears that I found at Michael's Stores.

Thanks Robert, this really fills a gap. Hopefully I can print it in 6mm, 10mm and 15mm?

Robert, as a fan of your work, is there any chance you might be creating armoured trains suitable for Sudan, Egypt 1882 or Boer War in the future?

monk2002uk23 Jul 2024 10:06 p.m. PST

No worries, Sydney Gamer. The model is set up for 6mm at the moment but it will scale to 10 and 15mm. The first print run went well but, as expected, some of the objects need to be made over-sized. The gun barrels, for example, need to be 2-3x the barrel calibre compared to simply scaling down the real-world measurements. I don't think this will be a problem at 15mm though.

I am working on SVG files too. This will enable the hull and the middle deck to be created with a laser cutter. All derivatives will be uploaded on Thingiverse too.

The current files can be uploaded to Thingiverse now, if you would like to experiment.

No plans for armoured trains but happy to consider the challenge. I would also like to do more of the Sudan-related gunboats too.

Here is the link to the Thingiverse page:

I suspect that versions for 10- and 15mm will need to be shorter and wider than the real-life proportions, in order to be usable on a wargames table.

The paddle wheel will be uploaded separately when I get the chance. Will keep you updated.

The paddle wheel has been uploaded to the same Thingiverse page. There are two versions. One is just the wheel; the other includes adjacent elements of the hull, in case you just want something to attach to the back of another model.

The idea of creating a 3D model of a rudder-driven ship on the Nile is really cool!. With Geometry Dash Scratch style, sharp shapes, simple colors, and challenging game style.

I think that should actually be called a wheel boat. Or a chimney boat. Maybe a frame boat. Or a window boat.

Definitely not a gun boat.
