Anyone tried using oil or acrylic pens to paint kilts? If so, we're you satisfied? Interested in any info regarding using pens for kilts. Especially horizontal and vertical lines.

I use them for horse tackle, borders on horse furniture and touching up cross-belts and such, so I suspect they would work for kilts. You have to be deft with them though…. they ARE paint, so they do not dry right off the bat, and whereas markers leave a trail, paint pens actually flow, so if you go too slow you get thick lines, or if you tarry, the paint will continue to flow and you get a pool of paint.

The other thing is your surface has to be dry of other paint. If wet the other paint can/will stain the tip of the color you are using.

I used them for 15mm kilts and they worked ok, a lot easier than keeping a straight line with a brush. I use 0.1-0.3 headed pens (usually Staedler pigment liner from a local arts and crafts shop)

3rd – THAT was funny. We were all thinking it.

I use the small d4 that looks like a monument to track kills.

I'm intrigued by the new AK Interactive acrylic markers, and they look really useful, especially for kilts and such.

Extrabio1947, I just purchased a set of AK markers. I have been intrigued with markers too. We'll see!

I would 2nd Herkybird that they worked OK, but just. In the end I thought I had better control with a brush, particularly at the intersections of the same colour.

I tried pens with true 15mm kilts. Hopeless. The folds caused mayhem. I could see them working on larger sized figures, with greater flat areas. At true 15mm once I realised that all I was trying to do was give an impression of 'tartan' life became easier. Trying to create perfect lines that meet up exactly was sending me around the bend.

I thought that the smallest Army Painter brush would help – it initially did, but doesn't hold any paint, which made things worse. A good brush tip is more important. And add some flow enhancer to your paint. Makes life easier if you can finish your line in just one go.

Extrabio1947,
I ordered the complete set, 70 Euros, and received it 5 days later. The shipping and packing were very good. I haven't used them yet, but will soon. I think they shipped it from Spain, not sure though.
