I am currently building the forces for an April/May 1945 Berlin game. The idea is the play an amalgam of famous episodes from the final days.
I am building Volksturm, Hitler Youth, maybe Kriegsmarine troops and some Charlemagne SS troops- loads of Panzer fausts. Also maybe a pak 40 or somesuch The Germans will also have a solitary King Tiger.
I am not sure whether the russians will be controlled by the rules or not.
The basic idea is a tank hunt. Each player taking one of the German squads must rack up a tally of Russian tanks. VPs will awarded according to the type pf troops used so somehting like a Volksturm or Hitler Youth squad will get say 50 vp for a tank kill. Better troops would get maybe 30and Waffen ss maybe 20 and the tiger only 10.
The difficulty is finding a ruleset that is skirmish enough but with some solid rules for panzer fausts but also not bogged down. The tiger needs to be formidable enough but not invincible. Russians will have mainly T34s but perhaps IS2 and SU 152s who might be worth more vp. Any suggestions on rules? I am happy to get a set and modify them a bit but i am no rules writer so i would prefer something ready to go. Ideas?

Little Wars TV did a Berlin game and made a video of it. They always provide info on the rules they used.

If you can find Dave Popplewell's PanzerKnacker rules they should be suitable.

Squad Leader, either the original set of rules or the Advanced Squad Leader version.

It has lots of scenarios as well on Berlin at this scale.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the links. I can't find where to get Panzerknacker rules. I would be keen to have a look at them.

Not sure if PanzerKnacker rules still in publication. Might be worth putting a wanted ad on here and trawling EBay etc for second hand copies.

Tanks are done differently, they have limited visibility and very little in an urban area if not unbuttoned and crews exposed to small arms. This makes them not like urban areas which is real, and helps tank hunting teams.

Now it's a fireteam based, but often the Germans fielded groups with the likes of Panzerfausts so that may not be a huge problem. Lets face it they are unreliable and in inexpert hands not that accurate even within their limited range.

You can generate the stats for the tanks directly from real data you do no need to buy army lists if you are actually interested in tanks.

On the down side for some, the mechanisms are radically different (though very simple) from a standard game and involves some heresy, like turning turrets on tanks. Worse even than that perhaps, it's a traitor to its class, and uses a D20 like RPG's not the long obsolete D6.

It's element IGOYGO (ish) but there are ways round that.

Load the free stuff and look at that, that gives you a free look at the system without needing to buy.

Oh for sure I would use Battleground WW2 for this. It has absolutely the right scope, detail and speed of play for this kind of scenario. The drama created by how that game handles tanks vs infantry alone make it ideal.

@Achtung Minen

Is it still possible to get hold of Battleground WW2? Haven't seen them around for years?

Yes, second hand for sure, the game has been out of print for decades. Noble Knight Games has a copy right now I think.
