On this Syrian T-62, are the wheels painted tan, or is this just accumulation of dust?

Dust. You can see where it kicked up too.

I have been not bothering to paint tracks and road wheels since I discovered AK Interactive pigment series. Because vehicles in the field quickly get caked in dust, dirt and once deployed, those areas take on the dust etc. from the local terrain. My experience with the AK product (verses Tamiya, shaved chalk pastels, Noch weathering powders, etc.) works best for me. It seems like after 5 minutes or so after applying, it does not rub off due to normal handling on my fingers. The looks achieved I find very satisfying for me. I studied pictures of real vehicles to see where the dust, dirt and grime accumulates on the surfaces on the vehicle. I ensure to try and replicate that kicked -up on my vehicles. The extra effort pays off in the 15 seconds to apply.

I've been staring and staring trying to come up with a definitive answer, and all I can think of is, why do we need to know?

Don't try to tell me how to pedant. I'm gonna paint one side and do the other as dust.

It is dust on the tires while the rims are painted a sand color but also have a layer of dust. That's the way it looks to me anyway.

They'll be burnt-out black after the Israelis hit them.

It looks like those T-62 wheels are painted sand colour.

My technique for 1/300th is to paint the base colour for wheels, then tracks dark brown Humbrol 173 Track colour, then a wash of GW Nuln Oil, dry brush Humbrol 118 tan for mud+dust and a few dabs of bright silver or chrome on a few leading track edges.

Jobsa.
