"Even these days, mention the name of William Tecumseh Sherman in many parts of the South and you'll get a virulent reaction.

Sherman, as most of us know, was the Union general who carved a destructive swath through Georgia in 1864, helping to bring the Civil War to a close and to bring the Confederacy to its knees. First he captured Atlanta, then swept down to Savannah, destroying much of what was left of the Southern breadbasket and ripping the fighting heart out of that section of Dixie.Old-line Southerners still use words such as despicable, brutal and worse when they talk of Sherman. In the late 1950s, my ancient great-great aunt talked bitterly of the days when she was a little girl and was forced to catch chickens for Sherman's troops as they came through her north Georgia town…"
