For those interested in the French armies of the Revolutionary Wars the work of R W Phipps is regarded as the best modern military narrative available in the English language. However it is structurally flawed as it is centred around the rising careers of the future marshals of Napoleon, rather than around the people who were actually making the key strategic decisions.

Am most surprised that all 5 volumes are currently downloadable because the work was reprinted in 1980!

Nice! Haven't seen them since grad school (Which was before the reprint.) But I'm not sure that "not focused as I would have preferred" is the same as "structurally flawed."

Lots of history and biography is written about aspects which are not my primary concern.

Many thanks for the kind comments. Am currently working on the next batch. I am having difficulty trying to decide how to break down the French Revolutionary Wars. Will certainly have a stand alone "Vendee" section and am weighing up whether to go by year or theatre of war (or the two combined).

Yes I used Phipps a lot when writing Throwing Thunderbolts, but as implied above he needs checking against other sources. link
