Background:

My campaign is set in what would have been 1860's United States after "The Cataclysm". In 1814 just after the War of 1812 in America and the Napoleonic Campaigns in Europe had concluded the entire North American eastern sea shelf collapsed, taking most of the East Coast up to the Appalachian Mountains with it. The resulting tidal wave that hit Europe devastated much of Europe, Africa and the Mediterranean areas killing much of the population. All of the major cities along the eastern seaboard were lost as was most of the population of the newly formed United States.

The year is now AC (After Cataclysm) 47 and the population of what was the United States is recovering. The Americas no longer have contact with Europe or the rest of the world. Newly formed nation states are beginning to emerge in America and as they form and develop they are constantly looking to improve their situation with land and resources.

The Setting:

Such is our campaign setting. We have two of these newly formed nation states vying for the fertile valley of the Shenandoah. In the north, centered around the Harrisburg-Harpers Ferry area is the small country of Hamish. These people are mostly of Scotch-Irish and German descent. In the south, centered around the Staunton-Lynchburg area is the nation of Curtistan. These people are mainly of English descent. Both countries have coastal areas and small ports and both want the fertile valley to themselves. (See the campaign map.)

Skirmishes have taken place between the two countries for a number of years as they developed, but neither country has ever tried to fully conquer the valley. Now as the countries have become more stable they have decided to take the valley for themselves.

The Armies:

The weapons have evolved in this Imagi-nation campaign as it did in the United States of the same period. Civil War era weapons will be used by the armies.

Each country has a small regular army of approximately 17000 Infantry (19 Regiments), 2400 Cav (6 Regiments) and 38 guns. In addition, each side has multiple Militia units it can call up in times of war.

The Miniatures:

I am using a mix of Pico Armor (ACW) 3mm for the regular Infantry and artillery and Magister Militum (SYW) 3mm for the Militia and cavalry.
I am using the 3mm range because I am planning on doing a Grand Tactical campaign. I currently have 11 of the 19 Regiments of Regulars painted for each side along with all the Cavalry and Artillery. I do plan on adding Horse Artillery to the mix as well though it is not yet purchased.

The Rules:

I'm planning on using the Stars and Bars Rule set as this will be mostly a solo campaign and I am looking for more of a simulation of the battles than a quick game.

Finally:

I will post pictures of the armies soon and continue to post updates of the progress towards starting the campaign and the actual campaign's progress. The map is such that I can (and hope to) expand the campaign as it goes to additional countries and include naval actions (in the distant future)

Thanks for taking a look

Intriguing concept. Have fun!

Don't leave us hanging. This is a new take on imaginations
as it is not 18th century or Euro-centric. Sounds intriguing.

Thank You all for the encouragement. I have a map built and as soon as I can figure out how to upload it and pictures, I will post the armies as I have them done so far.

Fascinating. My main concern is the small scale. I would use 10-15mm. Just my preference.
I assume the militia units are the main forces used for garrisons.
The history of 1 to 45 AC would be fun to speculate. The Indian question is a big situation. How was Canada affected. The Southern States were little affected so would be a powerhouse. Any Russian movement into the Pacific NW since they still owned Alaska.

I love What-If's and Imagi-Nations. Some guys I know are doing the German invasion of England late Victorian times in 3mm, the landscape at that scale and the massed units look great.

Have you looked at Valour & Fortitude rules, they handle big armies very well and have ACW list that you can tweak.

Personally I prefer 6mm as I can --just-- see which unit is which so you don't need to put ID labels down (but I am getting old).

Speaking of Russian movement, that's my project – I came on the board to ask for advice on it and found ths post too :)

TimePortal – I have actually given some thought to the Native American question but have not yet flushed it out.
The Militia in the game will be used just as the State Regiments were in the ACW. They will initially start at a lower morale than the Regulars (Standing Armies) and progress as the campaign does. Canada was not much affected but the Iroquois nations are a buffer between what is left of the United States and Canada proper. The Southern states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana never came to be due to the major presence of the Cherokee and Choctaw nations and Texas is an independent nation bordered by Mexico on the south and Native American nations to the North, East and West.

Freecloud – I do have the Valour and Fortitude rules with ACW list but am currently looking at using the Stars and Bars ruleset.

I am currently awaiting for Pico to restock the ACW command set to complete my regular troops so I can begin the campaign.

Just an Update to where I am at. While I am still planning on my campaign to remain in the Shenandoah Valley, I have taken the input here and from my son and have been fleshing out the entire North American continent with the remaining countries.

I have been doing some research and renamed the two countries in my campaign. The northern country has been renamed Westsylvanina and the southern country is now Franklin. Both of these had the possibility of becoming states within the US at one time.

As far as troops go, I have made my first order of troops to complete the forces I need and next month I will make the last order for the remaining troops for this campaign. Once I get those painted, I will begin the campaign.

This will be a Solo campaign with some input/help from my son.

More updates to follow

After Cataclysm, a lot of Russia still remains, and it makes as much sense for them to conquer Westwards to the Pacific as it did historically. Also, Russia had colonies running all the way down from Alaska to just North of San Francisco. Without Europe and US to worry about, they start to put more resource into that area. At some point a Russian exploratory force will cross the rockies…

And of course Mexico is now flexing its muscles…..
