+1 OC Yes, much is often made about the greater 'experience' of the Japanese fleet compared to the US. But actually, when it came to defending a task force against air attack and dealing with battle damage, the Americans had considerably more experience than Nagumo's force.The officers and crew of Shokaku and Zuikaku could probably have given Nagumo's men quite a lot of good advice, but they weren't there, were they? |

The USN's speed of adaptation may have been as important as the Two Ocean Navy Act to victory in the Pacific. The realization that aviation gas lines on a carrier were a vulnerability was a product of "Lexington's" loss at Coral Sea- and not even a month later, the USN had already figured out how to fill the fuel lines with pressurized CO2, to minimize the risk of fire. |
