For those who don't read every entry in the tv schedules, or haven't forked out for the video set. The BBC are repeating, after 40 years, their GREAT WAR series. It's on Saturday evenings about 6.30, part two was tonight. Sorry for the late advice but I missed it last week. |

I saw a review of the series recently, apparently it's the DB's, I've seen both episodes so far and would agree. Also interesting (to me) was that the critic thought that there weren't going to be any more of these great documentaries made by TV anymore as no-one would watch a series over 26 programmes. |

26 episodes. Made in 1960s. Voice over is nearly as good as the one in World at War. |

Naval & Military Press has this available on tape or DVD. Not cheap at £99.99/$150, but it is 26 episodes/17 hours worth of viewing! |

Did anyone see the programme shown before the first episode this time around about the making of the series? very interesting about the battles between the historians which where as viscious as any in the war about approaches. also they have a huge number of interviews of veterans (done when there were large numbers still about) and some of the stories of the interviews were harrowing in the extreme. In one instance a man just spoke about what he saw for over an hour, things he had never spoken of then suddenly he stopped and appear to wake up, bits of that are in the programme. more mundane events as to the trend of showing german footage going from right to left and allied from left to right (in good old John Ford style) also the amount of rennovation work they did in the 60's for the series which gave us shots which are familiar today I saw the series when I was 11 with my Grandfather who have "been there" and he talked me through most of it which is why the series was so special.
Made for the 50th anniversary of the war, I wonder what will be done for the 100th next year? |
