the agm-28 hound dog was a cold war nuclear missile carried by b52 bomber
primary purpose was to destroy russian sam site on way to target
decided later that it could be used to hit the actual target
so i assume it was fairly accurate what was its cep ?
what was the chances of russian air defences from that time frame being capable of shooting down that missile (it was a decent size)

CEP was 2.2 miles according to a wikipedia entry. link
I assume the SAM capabilities depended on the height of approach of the Hound dog to target. If it was in the envelope of the SA-2 – 7 the experience of Soviet 'advisors' in the Middle East and Vietnam could be used as a guide. Obviously this would be also impacted by the density of air defences in the area of approach.
That is a lot of variables.

I was with 17th Bomb wing when we switched over from the AGM-28 to the AGM-69. IIRC, the coating on the 69 would absorb radar and therefore be like finding a dime on the horizon. This nullified any radar guided defense systems pretty much.

So my conjecture would be that the AGM-28 was susceptible to contemporary radar defense systems at that time. Unless an enemy fighter witnessed the launch, the Hound Dog still had a decent chance to accomplish it's mission.

Just an educated response to your question. Pretty sure you can uncover more detailed info at this time.
