I decided that I could use the shotte without the pike for setting up pre-bayonette battles because: 1) the sculpts of the troops clothing is baggy, and with no thin protrusions like the bayonets of the Napoleonic models causing worry of breakage, 2) no painting needed for me since the armies are in 2 different colors, and 3) since my cataract surgery I see distance well but need glasses for closer work (painting, reading, seeing which way the figure strips are facing). Once done setting them up, I take off my glasses and survey the battle scene in a less-than-detailed observation. Looks fine to me.

Sounds like a good plan.
