What were the large, khaki, tarp-looking things for on top of the Landing Craft Assault boats? I'm guessing they are anti-slip mats and that they don't cover giant holes. Thanks.

Do you mean the things seen either side of the hold? Obvious in most photos of the LCA and I assume an antislip mat. I doubt a roll out cover for the interior,as I have never seen such in use;

Right. I'm curious about the long, rectangular pieces. My "giant holes" reference was actually to what is underneath them (which I assume is steel and not a hole).
I also considered a cover for the hold like you mention, but the size and placement are off, and they seem permanently affixed to the deck. Looks like anti-slip mats is the winner so far. Thanks for posting the image.

Glad to help. I had never even noticed them before.

A well known photo hows they were not universal and indeed solid beneath;

Constantly exposed to water and sunlight, I doubt those would last too long. Our boat crews always wore tennis shoes instead.
