I don't know about American lions (didn't even know they exist !) but my sabre-tooth tigers definbitely roar !

I have no clue as to roaring, but I have read that there is evidence that smilodon may have lived in prides. This suggests that they would have had vocalizations like roaring, grunting, thrumming. They only way to be sure is time travel or create a mutant that is as close as possible to the original.
