What kind of machine gun and mount or carriage did the Germans use in SW Africa during the Herero war? I assume it was an early Maxim. Is 1903 too early for a tripod or did they use field carriages?

The Germans used the Maschinengewehr 1901 (MG 01) – an early Maxim – during the Herero War. It was mounted on a wheeled sled.

You can find a photograph of an MG 01 on its sled in combat during the Herero War – at the Battle of Owiumbo, April 13, 1904 – at the following link (from the German General Staff's official history of the Herero War):

link (go to page 107).

The excellent website German Colonial Uniforms has a postcard image of an MG 01 and wheeled sled in German South West Africa:

And here's a very clear and detailed photo of an MG 01 and sled (not in SW Africa, but in service with the Bulgarian Army):

Roy Jones,

Thank you very much! I am looking forward to playing some of the scenarios in your excellent book.
