Hi,

There seems to be a lot said about Germans riding Stugs in the Eastern Front, but does anyone have info of this occuring on the Western Front?

Thanks

Concord has two books on the Stug3 and 4. You might check them. I will have a look in my store stock.
I did see a number of photos in the Panzer Vor group with troops riding Threes and fours. I did see one of a assault gun in a city with at least a dozen troops riding on it. In Panzer Vor2.

Better than walking…? ;-)

I do not think that you need to be too prescriptive about this question. From experience, infantry will grab a ride on anything that helps them avoid having to walk even in a tactical situation. I do not believe there was a policy or practice for this in the east while the west precluded it. Local situations define actions.

The British Army has no policy or doctrine on this but even as recently as the Falklands, infantry were hitching a ride on the only armour available, the Blues and Royals CVR(T)s.

I can't imagine an infantryman of any nation on any front not riding on a vehicle if it was available.

@79thPA I think you hit the nail on the head. Even today in the era of FPA drones and ATGMs with top attack modes infantry are still riding tanks in Ukraine. Seems insane to me but I'm not a ground pounder in Ukraine.

Very true Artilleryman, cold wet muddy and walking or sitting on a tank next to a warm engine.
Interestingly theres detail of British doctine on Tank riding in Ospreys Victory 1945 book.
Its an excellent book overall.

The Stug book from Concord has several photos of riding troops. One had troops on it as they traversed a waterway.
