Sure, so now Wargames Atlantic is jumping onto the 10mm band wagon train too…..

link

Might we start seeing 10mm mass-marketed historicals stocked on retail shelves in the near future (not just in proprietary Warlord Games' scales), and also coming to N. America.

Just guessing, but this may be a way plastic fig manufacturers see to guard/bolster sales vs. the 3D Printing/Print-On-Demand competition.

Thoughts?

Are you freaking kidding me? Just when I'm about to finish my 20mm Sengoku armies, they release these _ideal_ boxes?

But for those fortunate enough not to already have their bushi, these look very very nice!

Eumelus, thanks for your comments!

Checking out the plastic sets' media, these would look quick to paint up (and to get on the table)!

The in-house figure painter could use a tutorial on Japanese armor. While the lacing might be any color, the lacquered metal (i.e. the helmet-bowl, the arm and leg plates, etc) will be overwhelmingly black (with a few men in red-lacquered armor). Yellow, green and blue armor (as opposed to lacing) is not a thing.

Figures look good and the scale is great for small big battles. I am looking forward to what other periods they may come out with.

They look nice.

If they release Macedonian Successors or Punic Wars armies that look this nice, I might be in trouble.

Maggot28 Jun 2024 5:41 p.m. PST

Yes, these look quite good; I may consider under two conditions:
1. they deliver a complete range: peasants, warrior monks, ninja, unique commanders…the whole shebang…

2. I absolutely despise strips of figures; yes, I understand the "massed" ranks look that many like at that scale, I hate it..…condition two: I have to be able to separate the strips with minimal damage to the figures. Based on the pictures, that seems possible (unlike the Warlord Epic which are smashed together)…

the 10mm I have gotten have never come on strips. Now, I have only ever done metal, I can't say if plastic will come on strips.

Follow FlyX's link to see pictures of the sprues…..

As PzGen prompts, here's a link to their Asaigaru box (one of two sets shown for pre-order).

They even have casualty figs included.

It appears to me (I'll wager) – they put some time into designing these sets for what the wargamer might need for gaming out of the box (not just the "Front Rank" so to speak).

Not my period, but like Yellow Admiral and us others have expressed – hope to see other periods (one is hinted at in the works already, I believe was mentioned).

Appreciate the comments too – thanks for listing your thoughts and impressions!

FlyXwire suggests: "Might we start seeing 10mm mass-marketed historicals stocked on retail shelves in the near future (not just in proprietary Warlord Games' scales), and also coming to N. America."

Some are trying. AIM (thru Dark Horse Hobbies) is making our 3D prints packaged for retail store sales. I'll have pictures of the packaging up early next week. It consists of a blister box, backer card, models packed in foam showing off the item and keeping barrels, etc. immobile during shipment- hoping to arrive in perfect shape. On top of that, orders ship the next business day because they stock them (on-hand quantities displayed on site)- no waiting for "print on demand".

Any interested retailer in the USA (only) is encouraged to contact trade@darkhorsehobbies.com. Outlets in other countries to be developed later- lots of import/export rules and regs need to be digested first).

Indeed, seems like the market for 10 and 1/144th scale items is growing. It's come a long way since Minifigs introduced WWII in "N" scale (1:160th in the USA). back in 1998.

Tom, you've been at that cutting edge for a long time!

The argument taken from the Wargame Atlantic announcement linked above -

"10mm though is big enough to see all the great details and the character of the figures, yet small enough to paint quickly and then get a LOT on the table. Some battles can even be fought 1:1! Yet individual models are even suitable for single basing in some cases! We'll get into some follow up articles to talk about the scale of games and tables that 10mm will allow you to try out."

Actually, aren't many of us looking for that Mass Effect, fitted onto our preferred-size tabletop? (a number of scales can get us there too, with 10-12mm being quite a sweet-spot)

Dark Horse Master30 Jun 2024 9:23 a.m. PST

Indeed FlyXwire, many of us are…

Thanks, FlyXwire. for that compliment. We are trying.

There is an error in the graphic – the row of teppo armed Ashigaru should be x4, not x8, there is only one of each per sprue. The total then fits with the 328 figures (including the casualties) and the sprue images.

Looks like a good deal and would be likely to go with Pendraken's range, which covers most of the other options you might need.

Only query I have at the moment is; what size base would you need to fit a 5 man strip on ? They look to be fairly uniform but the figure seem to overlap the ends of the bases. I would want them to fit onto 40mm wide bases AND be able to put bases against others in a unit without gaps. Any info on that score ?

GF, looks like a 5-man strip would fit well under 30mm -

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Jul 2024 1:22 p.m. PST

Thanks, I'd missed that graphic. Looks like they might be a bit smaller than I thought.

Here's a very well-done interview from the On Patrol Wargaming Podcast with Wargames Atlantic's Charlie Monaghan, and at 1:29:30 he has things to say about the company's decision to come out with 10mm sets, and a bit on the future plans for "Grand Scale" –

I've already preordered my boxes. This release has come as a pleasant surprise, and the strip figures don't bother me.

We just getting started. Info here: link

Though we are focused solely upon 1/144th North Africa to start with.

Looks cool. I'm touring Japan right now, so maybe a perfect storm for yet another project!

Would you use Black Powder or Hail Caesar? Or maybe DBA?
