Was it still the case in the french army that the first/most senior line battalion was placed on the right side of the brigade in the first line?

It was pretty much that way in all Armies, as a matter of course. The same way that the Senior Company was on the Right of individual Battalions.

It was call "Regulation". Used to keep time and direction of movement in step and the relative position of each part of the formation in place.

Not Holy Law, sometimes, either by intent, or being surprised, formations could and did "Regulate" on the Left or by the Centre but the Right was the accepted norm.
