Looks like I had a hiccup posting

The question is how long did they wear the US flag armband?
I am starting to wonder of they took it off as soon as they linked up with their unit

I thought it was usually sewn on, at least for the 82nd it was. 101 did not wear one for D Day fer sure.

Not definitive by any means but limited research shows the following.

For Normandy the 82nd wore the American flag patch sewn on the right sleeve so not removable. And in never say never at least some of the 101st Pathfinders wore the American flag patch in similar manner.

For Market-Garden all troops had the American flag on the right sleeve. Some apparently wore a patch which was sewn on but many wore the flag in brassard form secured to the jump jacket by two safety pins. Obviously with the later the flag could be removed and am guessing they were ditched as soon as possible.

As to who wore the the sewn on patch and who wore the brassard I have yet to find a rhyme or reason. Hopefully someone will come along and correct me :)
