After the fun I had last year running a World Cup of Wargames Rules I have done the same thing this year but with Historical Wargames Miniature Manufacturers.

I have had to run the competition on Facebook again as I haven't found an alternative, so apologies if you aren't on that social media.

The voting for the Preliminary Round is open now on The Yarkshire Gamers Reet Big Wargames Group look below

link

Vote for your top 5, poll open until Sunday.

Entrance is for any Wargames Manufacturer past or present, trading or not and has a Historical range of figures.

Note this is for Manufacturers not ranges, so you can vote for a company but not for their Napoleonic Range and there Medieval Range etc.

We've had 4,500 votes and 144 companies nominated so far.

Top 16 qualify for Round 1, there are 8 seeds who will enter the competition in Rd 2, they are Perrys, Foundry, Skytrex, Elite, Peter Pig, AB, Heroics and Ros, Minifigs.

Enjoy

I could say a lot about various manufacturers but Facebook membership is a hurdle I cannot climb.

Thanks Jim and Iron Duke, why not suggest an alternative instead of being dismissive

Just a thought

yarkshire gamer They don't suggest an alternative because it is simply easier to complain and be negative.

Hey guys, don't get me wrong. If I knew of a more universal option I would have suggested one. I do have opinions on the OP but am unable to express them given a single fixed option.

How about doing the poll here?

What is a manufacturer? Would 3D artists who sell/give away files count? They are after all manufacturers who license production to third parties.

yarkshire gamer19 Jun 2024 2:32 p.m. PST

hi,

Perris0707, the poll has already started and i am 4,500 votes in, unfortunately it takes a bucket of my time to do so I can't run it in multiple places I'm afraid.

UshCha if someone produces their own Historical Wargames Miniatures they would be eligible. If they printed someone else's figures then my ruling would be no.

As its a public vote and nomination system, they would have to be nominated first and then receive enough votes to make the top 16 to progress and that just isn't going to happen, even popular 3d companies like Reconquer aren't doing very well at present.

Is it not possible to make a Facebook page publicly accessible?

yarkshire gamer19 Jun 2024 5:35 p.m. PST

Jim, as far as I know anyone can view it

Yes, I got to a page with lots of entries but could not reply to any comments as you need to identify yourself with a facebook account whereas I would prefer an anonymous approach.

Jim,

As I said above, I looked into this last year with the rules World Cup and just couldn't find a suitable alternative, that worked, wasn't full of spam or didn't cost me money.

Some sites just couldn't cope or don't offer the ability to have large numbers of options.

I'd love to have more people who aren't on Facebook involved but as yet I haven't found a viable option, I will keep looking for next year.

Regards Ken

What's wrong with using a service like Mail Chimp? A less expensive way is to send your vote to a website/URL/email account?

3D prints are different than the creator. Both should have a category IF the motivation is to recognize outstanding efforts to advance the hobby. I have seen 3D prints done by several folks and one can see differing quality. Begs the question as to why such a survey/vote exists or the background motivation.

yarkshire gamer23 Jun 2024 3:45 a.m. PST

Dye4minis

The motivation is to have a bit of fun, I did this last year with wargames rules and had over 15,000 votes which is pretty amazing for this hobby, there's no hidden agenda.

The motivation of people to vote is up to them, you can vote for a Manufacturer because they were the first figs you bought, or your favourite to paint or the most innovative in the hobby, why you vote is up to you.

Why not use Mail Chimp or similar, in my experience these 3rd party sites spam people with pop ups and advertising and people are reluctant to go on them.

Why not accept votes to an email account ? That's really easy, I have to count every single one ! In terms of my time that's massively more expensive, I have a day job as well and there is no way I could keep up, especially when the knock out rounds begin.

I'm aware FB is not ideal for everyone and I have apologised for that, but with the number of votes cast (4,800 so far in the Preliminary Round) an alternative would have to be match or exceed that.

It's simply a fun exercise and it engages a large number of people.

I think the 3d print question is interesting but irrelevant at the moment in terms of the competition. There are some great companies out there but they are polling very low (less than 0.5% of the leaders) so splitting it down further is not going to change the top 16.

There are just over 5 hours left to vote in the Preliminary Round so to avoid asking "why aren't my favourite company in the knock out rounds" get voting for them.
