I like Pirates of the Caribbean.

Captain Blood and Pirates of the Caribbean. I give honorable mention to the Sea Hawk. Hard to beat Flynn.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP18 Jun 2024 7:26 a.m. PST

One of my favorite is "The Black Swan" with Tyrone Power, MAUREEN O'HARA, Laird Creegar (a great Henry Morgan) and George Sanders. It is hard to beat Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland though or Robert Newton's Long John Silver.

Treasure Island 1950 with Robert Newton as Long John Silver. He set the stand-arrrrghd!

Captain Blood. Made in the 1930s and I show it in my Pirates course along with several other pirate movies. Nearly 90 years later and students still like this movie and find it entertaining.

Ice Pirates will always be one of my guilty pleasures.

Robert Urich announces he's going to take his space pirate ship though a wormhole. His 2nd mate, Ron Perlman, pulls out a canteen shaped like a hemorrhoid cushion and says, "I hope no one minds, but I have no intention of facing this sober."

DeRuyter18 Jun 2024 10:36 a.m. PST

Captain Phillips – no one said they had to be 17th century pirates!

David Manley18 Jun 2024 10:51 a.m. PST

Pirates of the Caribbean (but NONE of the sequels

The Scarlet Buccanneer, aka Swasbuckler

I do like Captain Blood, though.

There have been a 1/2 dozen versions of live action Treasure Island movie. The Disney one, with Robert Newton is very good. "ye be smart as paint, Jim Hawkins" My favorite is the Charlton Heston version, closer to the book. Jack Palance and Orson Wells versions not so good. In black and white, the Wallace Beery version is worth watching. In that one, Lionel Barrymore plays the best Billy Bones.

Under Siege – Also we play this on the tabletop

Captain Ron is pretty good, but I have to go with Captain Blood. It is timeless.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP18 Jun 2024 2:08 p.m. PST

Captain Blood. But I mourn the Black Swan they didn't make. What we have is not a bad movie, but pretty much all they left of the Sabatini novel was the title, and the novel is terrific.

Old Paul18 Jun 2024 2:14 p.m. PST

The Crimson Pirate with Burt Lancaster is a lot of fun.

Major Mike18 Jun 2024 2:48 p.m. PST

The Crimson Permanent Insurance (It was only a short in "The Meaning of Life")
I do like Treasure Island with Wallace Beery, the others all have their good points too.
I'll also add "Captain Phillips".

Zephyr118 Jun 2024 2:51 p.m. PST

Cutthroat Island, POTC 1 (the sequels got silly after that), Polanski's Pirates!, and a lot of those previously mentioned… ;-)

smithsco18 Jun 2024 3:17 p.m. PST

The buccaneer. Pirates of the Caribbean

JMcCarroll18 Jun 2024 4:03 p.m. PST

The Pirate Movie!

Hitman18 Jun 2024 5:30 p.m. PST

Black Sails (series). Pirates of the Caribbean. Yellow beard was silly but fun. Captain Blood. Treasure Island original from Disney. Heck almost any pirate movie works for me. ☠️

Buck21518 Jun 2024 5:40 p.m. PST

"Yellowbeard", "Pirates! Band of Misfits", and the first part of "Monty Python's Meaning of Life".

Captain Blood, Black Swan, Treasure Island (Wallace Berry) are the top three.

I think the next great genre crossover movie will be pirates versus ninjas until they have to work together to stop the zombies!

Captain Blood for my first choice.

The Black Pirate.

Flynn is good, but always a pale comparison to Fairbanks.

The planning and practice that went into the stunt where Fairbanks appears to grab a halyard and swing up onto a spar is still unbeatable stunt work today!

Treasure Planet

+1 on the Muppets!
