June 6th today

If you want to watch the ceremony, Fox is covering the whole ceremony this morning.

To all who served in WW2.

A great event carried out by great men supported by great women. I've got my flags flying in honor of them all.

I agree but I do feel that sometimes the only event we celebrate or honor from WW2 is D-Day. What about Anzio? The capture of Rome? Iwo Jima and the slaughter that was. Or Okinawa? How about the men who suffered thru the Bataan Death March. Their efforts, their sacrifice seems to always be overlooked by D-Day events.

Day of Days. If you have the opportunity, go to You Tube and watch Ronald Reagan's speech for the 40th Anniversary on June 6, 1984 at Pointe du Hoc. Fantastic speech. Remember when America had a real President. God, I miss Ronald Reagan.

D-Day was big but the coast of Normandy is also convenient (unless you're riding in a LCA with a 6-7inch swell)

I think 42flanker has hit the nail on the head, plus it covers a lot of troops. My old regiment swam their tanks ashore at H-5 minutes. All the veterans I ever spoke to thought it was a 'relatively' easy day and would quote other worse times, but these were small actions in out of the way places specific to the regiment or sometimes even a couple of troops. We visit those places on old comrades tours, but the TV news doesn't report that sort of thing.

It was the beginning of the end of the decisive offensive against Nazi Germany. It was terrifically risky, and if it had failed, the war would have been prolonged for more than a year. That seems to put it in a unique category.

I agree it was, and remains, a unique event and on reflection I think it's largely that factor.
