I regret to inform you that today I learned that Tony ANderson has died.

Sad day indeed.

That is a shame. Some of my very first sailing ships came from him back in the early 1980s.

Just this past weekend I bought a consignment box of Navwar 1/1200-scale ACW ships at Royal Hobby in Rockford, IL. The box contained 42 vessels (14 Confederate, 28 Union) plus 5 tiny Union mortar rafts. 12 ships plus the rafts are painted and based while the rest are still in their original packaging.

I went online to see if Navwar was even still in business (as I had hopes of acquiring more such ships) and I learned that it is. However I saw mention that its founder, Tony Anderson, had passed away back in May of this year at age 78. His widow, Noshi, plans to keep the company going.

I think Navwar has a special place in many of our hearts, and Tony was a true hobbyist. I've been playing with Navwar ships for over 40 years, back from when my tiny WW2 collection would do battle over the shagpile seas of my grandma's dining room.

I remember putting an order in (by post, as we all know what Navwar is like!). Tony noticed one of the ships was an 'odd one out' and didn't make sense. Instead of just shrugging and parcelling up the order, he rang me (by means of the electronic telephone – we all know what Navwar is like!) and checked I hadn't made a mistake. I had and he amended the order.

Personal service, a real dedicated person behind it. He's a great loss.

Agreed, the experience was always a good one, the scale and the variety of 19th century European ironclads was a treasure trove for me. Where else could you have bought a pack of mostly obscure Warships in Transition? Never a problem ordering the old fashioned way… He was unique and will be missed.

Can anyone advise me if Navwar is still accepting orders via fax or do you have to actually physically write to them or ring up now?

They are certainly accepting orders by snail mail. The fax had been an issue at NavWar for a while. Tony's wife is carrying on the business currently.
