I have miniatures rules that I use for tabletop battles. What I am looking for is a campaign system that could be used to add a strategic element and a motivation for the battles. I prefer the time period between classical age Greece and the early Roman Empire. I would like to use a simple map that allows for area control and the capture of major cities. However, I don't want something too complex. Perhaps a strategic board game would work, where I could fight the battles using miniatures. Any recommendations? |

Under "General Message Boards", go to "Campaigns" and you may find useful discussions. Cheers, John |

See if you can find a "Conquest of the Empire" board game out there and convert the board game map to your needs. auction |

FYI I didn't mean to buy this one. The shipping is a "bit high"… I just wanted to show you what I was referring to. |

Thanks John, in all these years coming to this site, I never knew there was a "Campaign" forum. Thanks for the suggestion Perris. |

If you want something simple and elegant but effective, try out the campaign system in the back of the DBA rules. |

The DBA campaign system seems like it would work well, and it would not be difficult to convert it to the rules I use. Plus, I see that there are a lot of user created campaigns out there, and that is very helpful. |

We've used Mighty Empires for simple campaigns in the past fighting battles with other rules. Sadly, it's OOP but you might be able to find a second-hand copy for sale in the usual places. |

I just got hold of images from Atlases of Ancient Military and overlaid the link and node network from the DBA campaign system onto it. The visual then seems to get players more involved as opposed to the simple diagram in the book. IIRC I even removed one of the links to represent the more constrained access into Egypt. Happy to send you a copy if I had your email. |

The block games from Columbia are great for this. For example: link |

As a possible topic look at ancient Sicily. You have the local Greeks, Carthaginians, and later, Pyrrhus and Romans. |

There's also By The Sword, which uses the continent of Marnon from the old Avalon Hill game Wizard's Quest. Although designed for Warmaster Ancients, it should work for any points driven ancients rules system. The rules and a larger, printable map can be found here: wfhgs.com/wma_marnon.html There is also To The Walls!, which is a relief of a siege campaign that was in Warning Order #56. It is certainly designed for the Ancients period. PDF link |
