I can see cover factors for infantry fire but cannot see any in either rules/chartts for tactical artillery or bombardment fire? Can anyone point me in right direction? Thanks

Don't take this as an authoritative answer, but your question made me blow the dust off R&E as well as E3:

I can't find artillery cover factors in the main body of the rules either, but there are two sets of cover factors in the quick-reference-sheets: One is marked small-arms; the other doesn't but bears the same factors.

Assuming Empire III can be used as a precedent:

The modifiers for cover are identical for small-arms as well as artillery:

Firers:
Disordered x0.50

Skirmishers:
Super-heavy x0.10, heavy x0.10, medium x0.10, light x0.10, open x0.20

Semi-skirmishers:
Super-heavy x0.10, heavy x0.33, medium x0.33, light x0.33, open x0.50

Formed units:
Super-heavy x0.10, heavy x0.33, medium x0.50, light x0.90, open x1.00; vs flank x2.00, vs square x2.00; vs closed-column x1.50

Artillerists:
x0.33

E3 calculates percent chance per firing figure or "tube".

So French divisional battery (E3 Fire Class I):

To 640 yards: 8 "tubes" @ 8% = 64%
To 400 yds: 8 @ 12% = 96%
To 200 yds: 8 @ 15% = 120%
To 80 yds: 8 @ 25% = 200%

Then apply modifiers. Each 100% post modification is an automatic kill.

Most copies I have seen come with a duplicate of Chart 7, which includes artillery fire (the basic chart does not). It's a sort of errata.

Nine Pound Round,
is your duplicate of Chart 7 the same as mine as mine makes no reference to inf or art cover factors! On page 101 of rules Chapter 15 Small Arms Fire there are cover factors set out and also in 8: Fire Chart Two Table 15-2A but they relate to infantry fire.
Maybe a solution, just use same tables but decrease the quoted values by half for artillery?

Allan F Mountford30 May 2024 5:30 a.m. PST

For the record, Empire 5 has the following for Grand Battery Bombardment and Regular Battery Bombardment:
. SUPER HEAVY cover x.10h
. HEAVY cover x.33h
. MEDIUM cover x.50h
. LIGHT cover x.90h
h = Ignore modifier for howitzer fire, except for woods

Kind regards
Allan

Thanks Stoppage and Allan but you are quoting the Empire factors but RxE.

Yes Stoppage two tables as you describe. Surely the same factors cannot apply to both infantry and artillery fire, so I'm going to halve the factors for artillery. It might not be wholley accurate but I have to get on with my French v Russian battle. Anyone think the factors for artillery should be quartered?
