This was Graham Cummings blog. Unfortunately, we lost Graham unexpectedly earlier this year; a real blow to the hobby. Graham founded Crann Tara Miniatures, which he later sold to Caliver Books.

Graham was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He always had time for others, and shared his knowledge and talents willingly. He was a true friend, and he is sorely missed.

I'm dubious about so many (or any) worm fences at Gettysburg, an area that had been settled for generations. I think post-and-rail fences would have been more common.

donlowry got me curious so I just took a look at McElfresh's Gettysburg map. He took care to depict the different types of fences at Gettysburg and where they were located. The major roads such as the Emmitsburg Road and Chambersburg Pike were largely post and rail. The secondary roads were largely split rail fences. There were many stone fences, mostly along fields. Depending on which part of the battlefield was being modeled, the table top may not be that off.

McElfresh also included an article about the various types of fences found on ACW battlefields. Stone were mostly in the Northeast and mountain areas. post and rail which took considerable labor to build were mainly in the Eastern Theater and along the main thoroughfares. Split rail fences were pretty ubiquitous and predominant in the Western Theater.

I love the McElfresh maps. They look like they were drawn for wargamers to use for their games.
