Another Team Biden foreign policy success!!

Another Retreat: Joe Biden Withdraws from Niger, Leaving Behind $100 USDM Military Base

The U.S. and Niger issued a joint statement on Sunday that set a deadline of September 15 for the withdrawal of all U.S. forces. The departing American troops leave behind a $100 USD-million military base built to support counter-terrorism operations in the Sahel region.

Wow -- submit one story and get four back, this is a great investment!

First Afghanistan, now Niger
Hmm, what could be the 3rd base to leave to our enemies?

I know we have talked about this elsewhere, but I do believe that the base is going to the Russians.

"WASHINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) – Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger that is hosting U.S. troops, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters, a move that follows a decision by Niger's junta to expel U.S. forces.May 3, 2024"

*sigh*

That's just so unsatisfying.

The problem with sovereignty is that the country housing the base gets to decide if you stay. With the exception of Guantanamo where we had a very favorable treaty, we have no right to be anywhere that doesn't want us.

Yes, I wonder what the other options would have been:

1). refuse to leave, & tell Niger their sovereinty means nothing. And risk a confrontation with the Nigerian government. I'm sure if the base was shot up & overrun, the same faces criticizing Biden for leaving, would criticize him for that.

2). Leave but blow everything up? That seems…petty.

So I am wonder what would have been the best thing to do? If the Nigerians are cozying up to Russia & Iran, do we even WANT to be there anymore? Besides the biased reporting of Breitbart & their very leading headline, I suspect there is more to this story, rather than highlighting how much of a failure Biden is.

Damon.

Option 3). Don't Bleeped text up US-Niger relations to the point where they demand the US leaves… just a thought…

A military coup by a pro-Russian faction changed the government. That is not the fault of the US anymore than when that cretin Duterte got elected in the Phillipines or Orban and Erdogan decided autocracy was superior to democracy. Sometimes the other side gets their guys in.

35th OVI, the base referred to in your headline is part of the capital's main airport, not the US drone base.

Well seems the locals are welcoming the Chicoms. Guess any US aid being sent there should be stopped. Let them eat Chinses cake. I wouldn't destroy the US base just not yet. We may end up reoccupying it at a later date. In that region things change and this will probably happen in the future, again.

The leadership and rulers welcome Chicom $$$$, the average person is going to get screwed by the Chinese colonial predation, which is as bad or worse than anything the Europeans ever did.

Destroy the base, leave nothing they can use, leave nothing of value. Don't worry about "hurting their feelings".We don't need to leave another base to people who hate us.

Yes I stand corrected, this is base 101 and the drone base is 201. but I am sure just a matter of time before the Russians have access to 201 and equipment we leave behind. Yes, they are determining what we will leave behind. Obviously a 100 million dollar base too.

Reading that our policies toward the new government are responsible for the withdrawal.

Got to agree with you there! Just going in for meetings to discuss training programs somehow they, east, central and west, managed to ask for SUVs!

Tally Ho!
