I decided to go big and white. Storage and mounting proved to be a problem.

This was my solution. Also includes why I think magnetic whiteboards are better than pin boards.

Great looking mapboard and room!

In the early 80's I used a 4x4ft sheet of galvanized steel for a similar purpose. Holes punched in the corners allowed it to be hung on nails. It can be seen on the right side of this photo (painted red):
