Space is likely the last peaceful economic and technological equalizer that can build a nation out of difficulty. Either we do it or we cease to be a superpower. Great Britain hesitated long ago and lost their chance and stance, and if economics are any indication, it will never recover out of the slow decline. Russia keeps driving itself into a brick wall and probably will go on doing this until it's people stop being stupid. China is facing a population collapse in 20 years so they need to make a move or face the stark reality that too many mouths to feed by a shrinking youth population component is not a pretty result – China needs OBSCENELY more money than it has just to keep its head above Gobi sands over the 40 years. BRICS isn't because they think it's cute to have their own currency…. India probably won't be able to do it before collapsing under their own population in 45-60 years.

No one else is even a factor. So, yes, either we do it now or it might be game over entirely for a very long time to come.

California has spent billions of dollars on high speed rail that started in the 1990s, and yet after 30 years has ZERO actual operating rail line. And you want them to go to the MOON?

Musk will go, and India, and China, and maybe we can hitch a ride with one of them.
