Elections have to occur in 50 days and Khameni will of course disqualify any semi " moderate ". State media will deny but a low turnout and, I expect, some rioting by what is a very young and very unhappy populace should follow.

I think the condolences are a political ploy to say to Iran if they start to act reasonably the door is open to better relations.
