This was a modest sized game set in the Franco-Prussian War, 1870. A French regiment with three battalions had to defend a hamlet and ridge line against a Brigade of 6 Prussian battalions. Both sides had supporting artillery. The primary objective was to test the club rules variant to ensure a relatively authentic battle and outcome. The French held on stoically, but were eventually overrun by the advancing Prussians, who deployed in a combination of line and attack columns, with skirmish screen. Nevertheless, the heaps of Prussian dead at the end of the game, attested to the superiority of the Chassepot rifle. With regards the rules, I think that the Prussian Krupp guns need to be improved to align with their prowess in the period.

Nice – what scale and figures are you using? |

The figures are Perry plastics and metals from their Franco Prussian range. Scale is a bit tougher as the metal figures are 28mm, but the plastic figures are 32mm – I have both. Not sure why the plastic figures are that much bigger, but there it is. |

Club rules. A cherry picking of bits of other rules that we like. Activation to move, D12s to hit. 4 hits per base. Standard morale etc. |

Good stuff. FPW is great gaming because of the asymmetry of weaponry and doctrine. Yes, it's important to rate these factors appropriately to capture the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing armies and translate them to the tabletop. Good luck and I look forward to seeing more such reports from Nottingham! |
