link Or possibly something from the X-men! Only it's very real, and an interesting device. Makes you wonder what else is out there… |

Makes you wonder what else is out there… I doubt you would even see it! I think it looks like something from 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' (a 60's series)! |

Ah yes, the Flying Sub! – I had almost forgotten! |

Looks neat! Also looks press release-y. How stealthy is it? What has it done? Right now it's just something someone is selling. |

Agreed, Andrew. I kinda raised an eyebrow when I saw the story (especially with the Star Trek interior). I'd think an actual military version would be considerably more Spartan and less "Marvel movie" in color markings. BUT the idea of it, and the Stealth claim are interesting— a small, SEAL team covert transport with torpedoes and mine-laying capabilities— that would play havoc in an enemy port, or to aid in closing off nautical narrows like the Bosporus, the Persian Gulf, and so forth. I can imagine what this thing could do to the Black Sea fleet! Not nearly as great for ocean-going purposes, but littoral efforts, it's got potential. (Even more so if they could make it moderately amphibious— say, able to run up on a beach (or almost on), drop off a commando team, and then run back out to sea, safe from detection.) |

All subs are stealth subs. That's the whole point. |

When I worked in NY, I don't recall the NY Post being a serious source of news? |
Parzival | 14 May 2024 8:17 a.m. PST |
Oh, give it a rest. The NY Post, founded by Alexander Hamilton, has been a serious source of news for over two centuries. But even if it wan't, this is a fun article, and the thing exists. Whether it functions as claimed is another story. But it has been covered in other news sites which you might find more palatable for your sensibilities. Do a search. Interestingly, last year there was considerably more coverage of a prototype remotely operated submarine drone developed by Ukraine with a 600 mile range and equipped with anti-ship torpedoes. You can search for those articles yourself. It's more barebones and didn't have the movie-look of this thing, but it works. My guess is that this is a version created as a "look what we could do" thing in an attempt to fund simpler versions. And one must note that Russia has gone through a sudden spate of ship losses in their Black Sea Fleet, and are very limited in their sonar-equipped vessels (one article said they had only three). It may be that some basic version of this is already proving its value. But even if not, it's a fun article for discussion here, just for the look of the thing. (Which is why I chose the SF board as well as the Ultramodern board.) |

The Flying Sub actually has pretty good glide properties underwater. I used to "fly" my 1/72 model of it in my pool. Properly balanced it could glide almost 3/4ths of the way (the 1/48 B-17 could make it all the way across with the props removed.) A shame I never figured out how to make jet/water engines for powered "flight"… ;-) |
