Some years ago someone planned then fell through to do a Empire game at a convention.
Wonder if it's still possible

Whatever one's opinion of "Empire" is, I think everyone would agree that it works best when all of the players know the system. So that would suggest running an "Empire" even only at a larger convention, with a sufficient number of sign-ups that have experience with the rules. I would also think you'd want to heavily advertise the event, here on TMP or on other sites.

Also specify which version.

Might work well as a club demo game at a convention

My last Empire was 2. I watched Scott bun a few games of Empire back in the 1980s. Eumelus is right about the players needing to know the rules.

You can't teach it at a convention if you really want to play a battle. The only thing I saw that kept a game moving was timed turns. It focused commanders to do the most important tasks first. If you wanted to waste time fighting skirmish combat, go ahead. It might mean you don't get all your melee's done.

I do remember whoever wanted to do this required experience players.
Yes what version might matter, I never played any after III. Maybe if VII ever shows up that might be the oppo

Empire is a good system but is a 'lifestyle' game. what I mean is if you play every week and only play Empire you could have great games because then you would know it backwards and forwards. Squad Leader if a similar rabbit hole. That can work but not to my tastes. I have seen it done at conventions but all it takes is one incompetent person to kill the game.

Only ever saw one wargame using Empire at a convension. It was a a refight of Leipzig with some dozen or more players and a couple of umpires. Must have been Empire III. This is in the UK in the Midlands and I seem to remember a group that called themselves the North of England Empire Players or some such. They also produced a home produced magazine.
